Current Situation
In a concerning development, Pune has witnessed a surge in Zika virus cases, with the latest addition being the sixth pregnant woman to test positive. This brings the total count of Zika-positive cases in the city to 12, prompting swift action from the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC).
Response and Measures
Following the detection of another positive Zika virus infection in Kalas (Yerawada), identified as the latest hotspot, PMC’s health department has intensified efforts. Urgent measures include:
- Directive to Private Hospitals: All private hospitals in the city are instructed to prioritize special care for pregnant women.
- Regular Anomaly Scans: Hospitals are mandated to conduct regular anomaly scans and NT scans for pregnant women exhibiting Zika-like symptoms.
- Testing Protocols: Samples of suspected cases are to be sent directly to the National Institute of Virology (NIV) for testing, with prompt notification of results to PMC for further action.
Dr. Kalpana Baliwant, acting health chief of PMC, confirmed these steps as part of the intensified efforts.
Current Status
Dr. Rajesh Dighe, assistant health officer at PMC, reassured that all 12 Zika-positive individuals, including the pregnant women, are under close observation and currently stable.
Affected Areas
The affected areas within Pune now include:
- Erandwane
- Dahanukar Colony
- Pashan/Baner
- Mundhwa
- Hadapsar
- Kharadi
- Kalas (Yerawada)
With nine out of the 12 cases being women, the health authorities remain vigilant amidst the growing concern over the spread of the Zika virus.
Public Advisory
The PMC continues to monitor the situation closely and urges citizens to remain aware of preventive measures to mitigate the risk of further infections.
Understanding Zika Virus
Zika virus is a mosquito-borne virus first identified in Uganda in 1947. It is transmitted to humans primarily through the bite of infected Aedes mosquitoes, which bite mostly during the day. Symptoms are generally mild and include:
- Fever
- Rashes
- Conjunctivitis
- Muscle and joint pain
- Headache
The majority of people with Zika virus do not develop any symptoms. However, it can have severe implications for pregnant women, potentially affecting the unborn child.
Preventive Measures
To reduce the risk of Zika virus infection, the following measures are recommended:
- Avoid Mosquito Bites: Use insect repellent, wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants, and stay in places with air conditioning or that use window and door screens.
- Eliminate Standing Water: Remove standing water where mosquitoes can breed.
- Stay Informed: Stay updated on local health advisories and follow guidance from health authorities.
By staying vigilant and taking preventive measures, we can collectively work towards mitigating the spread of the Zika virus in Pune.
