In a concerning development, Tripura is grappling with a severe HIV epidemic among its student community. According to the Tripura State AIDS Control Society (TSACS), 828 students have tested positive for HIV, with 47 fatalities recorded due to the infection.
The situation was disclosed during a recent media workshop organized jointly by the Tripura Journalist Union, Web Media Forum, and TSACS. Officials highlighted that many affected students had migrated out of Tripura for higher education, underscoring the widespread nature of the issue.
The spike in HIV cases has been attributed primarily to intravenous drug abuse among students. TSACS officials identified 220 schools and 24 colleges where such drug abuse is prevalent, signaling a critical need for intervention and support mechanisms.
Dr. Samarpita Datta, Project Director of TSACS, emphasized the importance of awareness campaigns and proactive healthcare measures to combat the spread of HIV. The workshop emphasized collaborative efforts from community leaders and health authorities to address this public health crisis effectively.
Efforts are underway to strengthen healthcare interventions and support affected communities, with a focus on preventing further outbreaks among vulnerable populations, especially students.
The TSACS continues to advocate for early diagnosis and treatment, which are crucial in managing HIV infections and preventing transmission within the state.
This situation calls for concerted efforts across all sectors to ensure comprehensive prevention, care, and support for those affected by HIV in Tripura.
