Delhi : India’s capital New Delhi has reported its first case of Mpox. A 26-year-old man from Hisar, Haryana, was admitted to Lok Nayak Jai Prakash (LNJP) Hospital after his return from the country with ongoing Mpox virus. Apart from genital ulcer and skin rashes the man does not show any more symptoms of Mpox not even fever. The patient is currently isolated in a ward.
In a Surprise visit to the hospital, Delhi Health Minister Saurabh Bhardwaj said not to panic and assured the people Mpox only transmits through direct contact and not airborne pathways.
LNJP Hospital has been designated as the primary center for treating mpox in Delhi, with 20 isolation rooms designated for this purpose, including 10 reserved for confirmed cases. Guru Teg Bahadur (GTB) Hospital and Baba Saheb Ambedkar Hospital are also prepared to assist, each equipped to handle 10 confirmed cases and five suspected cases.
During his visit, Minister Bharadwaj evaluated the hospital’s capabilities for managing dengue, ensuring that emergency protocols for patient identification and isolation are in place. He highlighted that additional surprise inspections of other healthcare facilities will be conducted to uphold a high level of preparedness.
Mpox was announced as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) by World Health Organization (WHO). Mpox has been spreading across various regions. Delhi’s authorities are closely monitoring the situation and for any additional cases as well.
